The Guardians photo book

A photographic tribute to artisans and shopkeepers

Over het project

Hello dear "backers" !

I am appealing to your generosity to help me finance the tribute book that will feature about 40 of my "Guardians", these artisans, workers and small traders that I have photographed in their daily environment for the last six years.

My photographic series The Guardians was born from my desire to document and pay tribute to all these people, those "guardians of urban temples" that we meet every day without really noticing.

An "urban temple" can be a shop, a stall of artisans/workers, where a person works with his heart, his passion. This person is also the holder of a tradition, a know-how, and stands in opposition to all these supermarkets or shopping centers that are now everywhere.

When I discover an "urban temple", I enter, introduce myself and take a portrait of the person at the center of his universe. The portrait must be taken in the very first minutes of my meeting with the individual so that the "Guardian" looks at me with the look of a stranger, in order that my audience can identify with it later.

I traveled in about twenty cities, including Beirut, Paris, Montreal, Mexico City, London, Berlin, New York, Istanbul, Marrakesh, and discovered hundreds of magical places overloaded with elements; places full of colors and filled with stories, kept each time by these characters who are sometimes touching, funny, eccentric and even scary.

Above you will find a video explaining my approach and the reasons why I am doing this.

Feel free to message me if you have any question.

Who am I and who are the Guardians?

My name is Vladimir Antaki and I am a French-Canadian-Lebanese photographer and author. I grew up in Paris and lived in Canada before quitting everything to travel and devote myself exclusively to my passion: photography.

My series "The Guardians" is born from my desire to document and pay tribute to all these artisans and small tradesmen who put all their heart in what they do and are the protectors of a tradition, a know-how.

Visually, this is what it looks like that. Check out the embbed video that explains my approach:
